What AIB Actually Charges You

AIB has rebranded its fees, not removed them: the old quarterly charge plus per-transaction fees becomes a flat €6 every month from July 2026. That is €72 a year just for the privilege of holding your own money.

Account maintenance €4.50/quarter Charged until 30 June 2026. From 1 July 2026 it is replaced by a flat €6 monthly fee, charged only in months with account activity. Waived for student, graduate, over-66 Advantage and basic accounts, and for customers paying an AIB home mortgage from the account.
Other charges €0.20/transaction Until 30 June 2026 every card payment, direct debit and standing order costs €0.20, and branch transactions cost €0.39. These per-transaction charges disappear under the €6 flat monthly fee from July 2026.
ATM withdrawals €0.35/withdrawal Each domestic ATM withdrawal costs €0.35 until 30 June 2026. From July 2026 euro cash withdrawals are covered by the flat €6 monthly fee.
Foreign exchange 1.75% Currency conversion fee on non-euro debit card purchases. Non-euro ATM withdrawals cost more: a 2.5% conversion fee plus a 1% cash withdrawal commission (minimum €2, maximum €6).
Overdraft 11.85% variable AIB's standard variable overdraft reference rate, calculated on the daily debit balance and charged quarterly in March, June, September and December.

Questions people actually ask

How much does an AIB current account cost?

Until 30 June 2026 you pay €4.50 per quarter plus around €0.20 per transaction and €0.35 per ATM withdrawal. From 1 July 2026 AIB replaces all of that with a flat €6 per month, about €72 a year.

Can I avoid the AIB monthly fee?

Yes, in limited cases. Student, graduate, over-66 Advantage and basic bank accounts pay no maintenance fee, and the €6 monthly fee is also waived if you pay an AIB mortgage on your home from your personal current account. AIB also skips the fee in months with no account activity.

What does AIB charge for using my debit card abroad?

Outside the eurozone AIB adds a 1.75% currency conversion fee to card purchases. Non-euro ATM withdrawals cost a 2.5% conversion fee plus a 1% cash withdrawal commission of at least €2 and up to €6.

What changed with AIB fees in 2026?

From 1 July 2026 AIB scrapped quarterly maintenance and per-transaction charges in favour of a flat €6 monthly fee covering unlimited euro transactions. It also dropped several penalty fees, including the €10 unpaid item fee.

What interest does AIB charge on an overdraft?

AIB charges its standard variable overdraft reference rate of 11.85%, applied to the daily debit balance and billed quarterly.
